When Marty was rescued from the kill pen, he did not immediately bond with any of the other donkeys and was wary and very frightened of humans.  Ultimately he chose to bond with a large horse who was sick with cancer.  The horse loved interacting with people and over time was able to help Marty to give humans another chance.  As his horse buddy's condition deteriorated, Marty only became more dedicated to him and never left his side.  Sadly, the horse passed and Marty was left alone again -- until he met Zelda (see Zelda's tale).  Since then he has become Zelda's most ardent fan and her protector.  He oversees Zelda's every interaction with other donkeys or humans and he panics when she is out of sight.  Marty has proved himself to be the ultimate caregiver donkey.
